AIMS: To determine the prevalence of dilated ventricles and concomitant high blood glucose measures. METHODS: We retrieved blood glucose measures from the emergency department database and selected a subgroup of individuals having both the radiological marker Evans' index (EI) values and blood glucose measures. RESULTS: Out of 1221 consecutive patients submitted to axial Computed Tomography scans, a blood glucose measure was detected in 841 individuals. 176 scans (21 %) showed an EI > 0.30. According to the blood glucose categorization, diabetic patients were 104 (12 %), 25 of them (24 %) were dilated (mean EI 0.33). The age difference between dilated and not-dilated ventricles is about ten years in not-diabetic participants, whereas it is five years in diabetic participants. The age difference between dilated and not-dilated ventricles is about 10 years in diabetic men, whereas it zero in diabetic women. CONCLUSIONS: Pathological ventricular enlargement is more frequent in men and in the elderly. In diabetic patients (especially women), the cerebral ventricles enlarge faster than in non-diabetic individuals. Age, sex, and diabetes may interact in determining how cerebral ventricle size changes over time, especially in diabetic women, making routine brain imaging advisable in these patients after the age of 70 years.

RESUMO

Since 1998, when Schmahmann first proposed the concept of the "cognitive affective syndrome" that linked cerebellar damage to cognitive and emotional impairments, a substantial body of literature has emerged. Anatomical, neurophysiological, and functional neuroimaging data suggest that the cerebellum contributes to cognitive functions through specific cerebral-cerebellar connections organized in a series of parallel loops. The aim of this paper is to review the current findings on the involvement of the cerebellum in selective cognitive functions, using a psychophysiological perspective with event-related potentials (ERPs), alone or in combination with non-invasive brain stimulation techniques. ERPs represent a very informative method of monitoring cognitive functioning online and have the potential to serve as valuable biomarkers of brain dysfunction that is undetected by other traditional clinical tools. This review will focus on the data on attention, executive functions, and time processing obtained in healthy subjects and patients with varying clinical conditions, thus confirming the role of ERPs in understanding the role of the cerebellum in cognition and exploring the potential diagnostic and therapeutic implications of ERP-based assessments in patients.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, with incidence and prevalence rates of 8-18 per 100,000 people per year and 0.3-1%, respectively. As parkinsonian symptoms do not appear until approximately 50-60% of the nigral DA-releasing neurons have been lost, the impact of routine structural imaging findings is minimal at early stages, making Parkinson's disease an ideal condition for the application of functional imaging techniques. The aim of this multicenter study is to assess whether 123I-FP-CIT (DAT-SPECT), 123I-MIBG (mIBG-scintigraphy) or an association of both exams presents the highest diagnostic accuracy in de novo PD patients. METHODS: 288 consecutive patients with suspected diagnoses of Parkinson's disease or non- Parkinson's disease syndromes were analyzed in the present Italian multicenter retrospective study. All subjects were de novo, drug-naive patients and met the inclusion criteria of having undergone both DAT-SPECT and mIBG-scintigraphy within one month of each other. RESULTS: The univariate analysis including age and both mIBG-SPECT and DAT-SPECT parameters showed that the only significant values for predicting Parkinson's disease in our population were eH/M, lH/M, ESS and LSS obtained from mIBG-scintigraphy (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: mIBG-scintigraphy shows higher diagnostic accuracy in de novo Parkinson's disease patients than DAT-SPECT, so given the superiority of the MIBG study, the combined use of both exams does not appear to be mandatory in the early phase of Parkinson's disease.

Time management is an important aspect of human behaviour and cognition. Several brain regions are thought to be involved in motor timing and time estimation tasks. However, subcortical regions such as the basal nuclei and cerebellum seem to play a role in timing control. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the cerebellum in temporal processing. For this purpose, we transitorily inhibited cerebellar activity by means of cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and studied the effects of this inhibition on contingent negative variation (CNV) parameters elicited during a S1-S2 motor task in healthy subjects. Sixteen healthy subjects underwent a S1-S2 motor task prior to and after cathodal and sham cerebellar tDCS in separate sessions. The CNV task consisted of a duration discrimination task in which subjects had to determine whether the duration of a probe interval trial was shorter (800 ms), longer (1600 ms), or equal to the target interval of 1200 ms. A reduction in total CNV amplitude emerged only after cathodal tDCS for short and target interval trials, while no differences were detected for the long interval trial. Errors were significantly higher after cathodal tDCS than at baseline evaluation of short and target intervals. No reaction time differences were found for any time interval after the cathodal and sham sessions. These results point to a role of the cerebellum in time perception. In particular, the cerebellum seems to regulate temporal interval discrimination for second and sub-second ranges.

Fatigue is a common non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD). Among other pathophysiological mechanisms, neuroinflammation, a pathological PD hallmark associated with changes in glutamatergic transmission in basal ganglia, has been proposed as a crucial factor closely related to fatigue. To test the hypothesis that safinamide could represent an effective treatment of fatigue in PD patients, given its dual mechanism of action (it selectively and reversibly inhibits MAOB and modulates glutamate release), we administered the validated versions of fatigue severity scale (FSS) and Parkinson fatigue scale-16 (PFS-16) to 39 fluctuating PD patients with fatigue before and after a 24-week treatment period with safinamide as add-on therapy. An assessment of secondary variables such as depression, quality of life (QoL), and motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS) was conducted. After 24 weeks of treatment with safinamide, both FSS (p < 0.001) and PF-S16 (p = 0.02) scores were significantly lower than at baseline. Moreover, 46.2% and 41% of patients scored below the cut-off for the presence of fatigue according to FSS and PFS-16, respectively (responders). At follow-up, a significant difference emerged between responders and non-responders in mood, QoL, and NMS. Fatigue improved in fluctuating PD, and more than 40% of patients were "fatigue-free" after a 6 month treatment with safinamide. Patients without fatigue at follow-up displayed significantly better scores in QoL domains, such as mobility or activities of daily living, although disease severity remained stable, supporting the hypothesis that fatigue could considerably affect QoL. Drugs that interact with multiple neurotransmission systems, such as safinamide, could be useful in reducing this symptom.

Background: Cannabinoids may be useful to treat pain, epilepsy and spasticity, although they may bear an increased risk of cardiovascular events. This study aims to evaluate the cardiovascular safety of nabiximols, a cannabis-based drug, in patients with spasticity following stroke, thus presenting an increased cardiovascular risk. Methods: This is an ancillary study stemming from the SativexStroke trial: a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study aimed at assessing the effect of nabiximols on post-stroke spasticity. Patients were treated with nabiximols oromucosal spray or placebo and assessed before and after two phases of 1-month duration each. Only the phase with the active treatment was considered for each patient who completed the study. The average values of blood pressure (diastolic, systolic, differential) and heart rate from the first 5 days of the phase (lowest nabiximols dosage) were compared to the average values recorded during the last 5 days at the end of the phase (highest nabiximols dosage). Baseline comparisons between gender, stroke type and affected side and correlation between age and blood pressure and heart rate were performed. The study was registered with the EudraCT number 2016-001034-10. Results: Thirty-four patients completed the study and were included in the analysis. Thirty-one were taking antihypertensive drugs and, among these, 12 were taking beta-blockers. During the study, no arrhythmic events were recorded, blood pressure and heart rate did not show pathological fluctuations, and no cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events occurred. At baseline blood pressure and heart rate were comparable concerning gender, stroke type and affected side. A significant direct correlation emerged between differential blood pressure and age and an inverse correlation between diastolic blood pressure and age. No correlation emerged between systolic blood pressure or heart rate and age. Blood pressure and heart rate did not change during nabiximols treatment compared to the baseline condition. Conclusion: This ancillary study adds evidence that, in patients who already underwent a cerebrovascular accident, nabiximols does not determine significant blood pressure and heart rate variation or cardiovascular complications. These data support the cardiovascular safety of nabiximols, encouraging more extensive studies involving cannabinoids characterized by slow absorption rates.

Scientific literature demonstrated the impairment in cognitive/executive functions and pragmatic language in SLE patients, potentially involving also asymptomatic subjects. The present study focuses on the assessment in an SLE cohort of emotional intelligence, which is an ability regulated by the network of the executive functions, cognitive abilities involved in the initiation, planning, organization, and regulation of achievement-oriented behaviors: with emotional. Thus, emotional intelligence, defined as the ability to reason with emotions, was evaluated in a SLE cohort diagnosed according to the 1997 American College of Rheumatology criteria. As control healthy subjects were enrolled. The Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT), a skill-scale that measures the ability to perform tasks and solve emotional problems, was administered to patients and controls. Second, a group of SLE patients underwent the Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) method in order to assess the potential impact of art in cognitive skills like critical thinking, problem solving, and emotional intelligence quotient. The protocol also included the evaluation of the improvement of some skills using a validated VTS skill grid. Self-reported scales for anxiety and depression were performed to rule out the influence of mood disorders on emotional intelligence. The present study demonstrated similar quotient scores of emotional intelligence in SLE patients and healthy controls. Furthermore, VTS method could help in improving this cognitive ability in patients, by implementing critical thinking and problem solving, promoting empathy, and improving tolerance to ambiguity and relational capacity.

Background: Nabiximols is a cannabis-based drug to treat spasticity-associated symptoms currently approved for patients with multiple sclerosis only. Cannabinoids are useful in an increasing number of medical conditions but may bear an increased risk for cardiovascular events. SativexStroke is a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled crossover monocentric clinical trial investigating the efficacy and safety of nabiximols in patients with spasticity following stroke. Methods: Patients were treated with nabiximols oromucosal spray or placebo and assessed before and after two phases of 1-month duration each. Cardiovascular safety was assessed before and during the trial. Primary endpoints were changes in spasticity numeric rating scale scores and electromyographic recording of the stretch reflex in affected wrist flexors. Secondary outcome measures were numeric rating scale scores for pain, sleep and bladder function, the number of daily spasms and clinical assessment of spasticity with the modified Ashworth scale. The study was registered with the EudraCT number 2016-001034-10. Results: Between May 2, 2018, and February 20, 2020, 41 patients entered the study. Seven patients did not complete the study, so 34 were included in the analysis. Two serious adverse events occurred, but none related to cardiovascular function. Primary and secondary efficacy outcome measures did not change from baseline during nabiximols treatment relative to placebo. Conclusion: This study suggests that nabiximols use is probably safe in stroke patients, therefore cannabinoid usefulness may be further investigated. The lack of nabiximols effect could be related to low pain levels in recruited patients or different spasticity mechanisms between post-stroke and multiple sclerosis patients. Similarly, a beneficial effect of nabiximols could have emerged if more patients with a higher level of spasticity at baseline were recruited. The aim of this study was to identify early radiological signs of secondary hydrocephalus. We retrieved neuroradiological data from scans performed at various times in patients who underwent surgery for secondary hydrocephalus due to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), or brain tumour (BT). Baseline measurements, performed on the earliest images acquired after the neurological event (T0), included Evans' index, the distance between frontal horns, and the widths of both temporal horns. The next neuroimage that showed an increase in at least one of these four parameters­and that lead the surgeon to act­was selected as an indication of ventricular enlargement (T1). Comparisons of T0 and T1 neuroimages showed increases in Evans' index, in the mean frontal horn distance, and in the mean right and left temporal horn widths. Interestingly, in T1 scans, mean Evans' index scores > 0.30 were only observed in patients with BT. However, the temporal horn widths increased up to ten-fold in most patients, independent of Evans' index scores. In conclusion temporal horn enlargements were the earliest, most sensitive findings in predicting ventricular enlargement secondary to TBI, SAH, or BT. To anticipate a secondary hydrocephalus radiological diagnosis, clinicians should measure both Evans' index and the temporal horn widths, to avoid severe disability and poor outcome related to temporal lobe damage.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have shown promise in treating cancer patients, and pembrolizumab is a monoclonal IgG4 antibody that targets a human cell surface protein (receptor) called PD-1. Among the side effects, a rare cranial nerve palsy unrelated to the surgical treatment may occur. We report a case of a woman, which after neurosurgical treatment for cerebellar metastasis presented painless third cranial nerve palsy. The benefits of ICIs have been ascertained, but side effects also take place. Neurological symptoms should be recognized early to avoid substantial morbidity, and if necessary, the oncologic treatment should be changed.

BACKGROUND: Information on prevalence, pathophysiology, and clinical assessment of paratonia are scarce. In a previous study, we suggested that surface electromyography (EMG) can be used to assess paratonia. OBJECTIVE: To assess clinical and EMG features of paratonia in both patients with cognitive impairment and healthy subjects. METHODS: We examined 18 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), 21 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), 30 healthy seniors (seniors), and 30 healthy juniors (juniors). Paratonia was assessed using the "Paratonia Scale". EMG bursts were recorded from biceps and triceps during manually applied passive movements of elbow joint. Continuous (sinusoidal) and discontinuous (linear) movements were applied at 2 different velocities (fast and slow). RESULTS: In comparison to juniors, seniors had higher clinical scores. In comparison to seniors, AD had higher oppositional scores, while MCI had higher facilitatory scores. EMG activity during passive movements correlated with paratonia clinical scores, was velocity-dependent and increased with movement repetition, most effectively for sinusoidal movements. Similar EMG activity was detected in not paratonic muscles. CONCLUSION: Paratonia increases with normal aging and cognitive decline progression. While facilitatory paratonia is due to involuntary contraction of the shortening muscle, oppositional paratonia is due, at least partially, to involuntary contraction of the lengthening muscle. Most characteristic feature of this muscle contraction is the progressive increase with movement repetition, that helps distinguish oppositional paratonia from spasticity and rigidity. A similar EMG activity is detected in not paratonic muscles, showing that, during tone assessment, the descending motor system is incompletely inactivated also in normotonic muscles.

Botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT-A) is the active substance in pharmaceutical preparations widely used worldwide for the highly effective treatment of various disorders. Among the three commercial formulations of BoNT-A currently available in Italy for neurological indications, abobotulinum A toxin (Dysport®, Ipsen SpA, Milano, Italy) and incobotulinum A toxin (Xeomin®, Merz Pharma Italia srl, Milano, Italy) differ in the content of neurotoxin, non-toxic protein, and excipients. Clinical applications of BoNT-A adopt extremely diluted solutions (10-6 mg/mL) for injection in the target body district. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and chemometrics allow rapid, non-invasive, and non-destructive methods for qualitative and quantitative analysis. No data are available to date on the chemometric analysis of the spectral fingerprints acquired from the diluted commercial formulations of BoNT-A. In this proof-of-concept study, we tested whether NIRS can categorize solutions of incobotulinum A toxin (lacking non-toxic proteins) and abobotulinum A toxin (containing non-toxic proteins). Distinct excipients in the two formulations were also analyzed. We acquired transmittance spectra in the visible and short-wave infrared regions (350-2500 nm) by an ASD FieldSpec 4™ Standard-Res Spectrophotoradiometer, using a submerged dip probe designed to read spectra in transflectance mode from liquid samples. After preliminary spectra pre-processing, principal component analysis was applied to characterize the spectral features of the two BoNT-A solutions and those of the various excipients diluted according to clinical standards. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis was used to implement a classification model able to discriminate the BoNT-A solutions and excipients. NIRS distinguished solutions containing distinct BoNT-A commercial formulations (abobotulinum A toxin vs. incobotulinum A toxin) diluted at recommended volumes for clinical reconstitution, distinct proteins (HSA vs. incobotulinum A toxin), very diluted solutions of simple sugars (lactose vs. sucrose), and saline or water. Predictive models of botulinum toxin formulations were also performed with the highest precision and accuracy.

Background and Objectives: The most prevalent dementia are Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. There is evidence that cortical synaptic function may differ in these two conditions. Habituation of cortical responses to repeated stimuli is a well-preserved phenomenon in a normal brain cortex, related to an underlying mechanism of synaptic efficacy regulation. Lack of habituation represents a marker of synaptic dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to assess the habituation of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in 29 patients affected by mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD-type) or vascular (VD-type) dementia. Materials and Methods: All patients underwent a clinical history interview, neuropsychological evaluation, and neuroimaging examination. SEPs were elicited by electrical stimulation of the right median nerve at the wrist. Six-hundred stimuli were delivered, and cortical responses divided in three blocks of 200. Habituation was calculated by measuring changes of N20 amplitude from block 1 to block 3. SEP variables recorded in patients were compared with those recorded in 15 age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers. Results: SEP recordings showed similar N20 amplitudes in AD-type and VD-type patients in block 1, that were higher than those recorded in controls. N20 amplitude decreased from block 1 to block 3 (habituation) in normal subjects and in VD-type patients, whereas in AD-type patients it remained unchanged (lack of habituation). Conclusions: The findings suggest that neurophysiologic mechanisms of synaptic efficacy that underneath habituation are impaired in patients with AD-type dementia but not in patients with VD-type dementia. SEPs habituation may contribute to early distinction of Alzheimer's disease vs. vascular dementia.

Central fatigue in Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common and disabling symptom that further worsens the patients' quality of life. A deficit in the serotonergic system may be implicated in the occurrence of fatigue in patients with PD as well as in those with other chronic conditions characterized by fatigue. The loudness dependence of auditory evoked potentials (LDAEP) is a neurophysiological tool that has proved to be effective in measuring the serotonergic central function in vivo. The aim of the present study was to assess central serotonergic activity in PD patients and to explore its possible association with the presence of fatigue. LDAEP was recorded in 38 PD patients (26 without fatigue - PDnF and 12 with fatigue - PDF) and 34 healthy controls. A significant difference between parkinsonian patients and controls emerged, with patients displaying stronger LDAEP values (which reflect a lower serotonergic central tone) than controls. By contrast, no differences in LDAEP emerged between PDF and PDnF. Our electrophysiological data confirmed the presence of a deficit in serotonergic central transmission in PD. An association between this deficit and fatigue was not demonstrated. It is likely that an altered dopamine/serotonin balance, rather than a serotonin deficit alone, is involved in the genesis of central fatigue. This complex and multifaceted symptom is related above all to a dysfunction in the striato-thalamo-cortical loop that connects the neostriatum to the frontal lobe and is strongly affected by motivation.

In post-stroke hemiparesis, neural impairment alters muscle control, causing abnormal movement and posture in the affected limbs. A decrease in voluntary use of the paretic arm and flexed posture during rest also induce secondary tissue transformation in the upper limb muscles. To obtain a specific, accurate, and reproducible marker of the current biological status of muscles, we collected visible (VIS) and short-wave Infrared (SWIR) reflectance spectra in vivo using a portable spectroradiometer (350-2500 nm), which provided the spectral fingerprints of the elbow flexors and extensors. We compared the spectra for the affected and unaffected sides in 23 patients with post-stroke hemiparesis (25-87 years, 8 women) and eight healthy controls (33-87 years, 5 women). In eight patients, spectra were collected before and after botulinum toxin injection. Spectra underwent off-line preprocessing, principal component analysis, and partial least-squares discriminant analysis. Spectral fingerprints discriminated the muscle (biceps vs. triceps), neurological condition (normal vs. affected vs. unaffected), and effect of botulinum toxin treatment (before vs. 30 to 40 days vs. 110 to 120 days after injection). VIS-SWIR spectroscopy proved valuable for non-invasive assessment of optical properties in muscles, enabled more comprehensive evaluation of hemiparetic muscles, and provided optimal monitoring of the effectiveness of medication.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate prevalence of EMG patterns underlying hypertonia in multiple sclerosis (MS) and whether these patterns indicate different levels of spinal excitability. METHODS: We investigated the EMG activity recorded from 108 hypertonic muscles of 59 consecutive MS patients. To investigate spastic dystonia (SD), we looked for the presence of EMG activity in muscles in a resting position. To investigate dynamic stretch reflex (DSR) and static stretch reflex (SSR), we looked for the presence of EMG activity in response to a manually performed passive stretch of the muscle. RESULTS: DSR was evoked in 104 muscles. In 51 muscles, DSR was the sole EMG activity. This pattern corresponds to the classical notion of spasticity, and was predominant in extensors. In contrast, SSR was detected in 48 muscles - predominantly in flexors. SD was observed in 28 muscles, showing even distribution in flexor and extensor muscles. Only in the flexors, SSR was associated with a larger DSR compared to spasticity. CONCLUSIONS: These findings likely depend on the central effects of both flexor and extensor spindle afferents on the homonymous spinal motor neurons. SIGNIFICANCE: Improving our capacity to assess spinal excitability in MS patients.

Electronic cigarettes are a popular, easily purchased, alternative source of nicotine that is considered safer than conventional tobacco. However, Intentional or accidental exposure to e-liquid substances, mainly nicotine, can lead to serious, potentially fatal toxicity. Emergency and critical care physicians should keep in mind acute intoxication of this poison with a biphasic toxic syndrome. We highlight its potentially fatal outcome and suggest monitoring the adverse effects of nicotine according to a multimodal protocol integrating somatosensory evoked potentials, electroencephalography and neuroimaging data with anamnestic report and toxicological and laboratory data.

Advancement of technology and device miniaturization have made near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) techniques cost-effective, small-sized, simple, and ready to use. We applied NIRS to analyze healthy human muscles in vivo, and we found that this technique produces reliable and reproducible spectral "fingerprints" of individual muscles, that can be successfully discriminated by chemometric predictive models. The dataset presented in this descriptor contains the reflectance spectra acquired in vivo from the ventral and dorsal aspects of the arm using an ASD FieldSpec® 4 Standard-Res field portable spectroradiometer (350-2500 nm), the values of the anthropometric variables measured in each subject, and the codes to assist access to the spectral data. The dataset can be used as a reference set of spectral signatures of "biceps" and "triceps" and for the development of automated methods of muscle detection.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neuro-degenerative disorder affecting the striatal motor system, caused by the loss of neuronal cells in the mid-brain, where reduced amounts of dopamine do cause involuntary movements and others symptoms. Alterations of methylome have been reported in PD epigenomic studies, and also human dopamine transporter gene (DAT1, SLC6A3) is considered as a candidate risk factor for PD. Since the DNA methylation on DAT promoter may well have a role in the development of this disease, we aimed to further assess the epigenetic control, by focusing on specific CpG sites located in the 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR) of the DAT1 gene. Significant changes in DAT 5'-UTR methylation were already found in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of PD subjects (Rubino et al., 2020). Of note, methylation values at the CpG 5 were increased. We run on same data a novel statistical approach: cross-correlation between pairs of loci. CpG 5 was the only always-differing variable but, alternatively, CpGs 2 and 6 or CpGs 1 and 3 were also significantly correlated with CpG 5. Interestingly, this picture emerged for those patients whose M2xM6 index was above-median; loci were rather independent for below-median patients. Present data may shed light into dynamics occurring at 5'-UTR of DAT1, a gene involved in PD but also in many psycho-physiological pathologies.

OBJECTIVE: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are frequent complications among acute patients hospitalized in neurological units, especially among those hospitalized for stroke. This study aimed to investigate if enhanced hygienic measures, including the systematic use of personal protective equipment (PPE), determined a decrease in HAI during the recent COVID-19 outbreak in "COVID-free" neurological units. METHODS: Patients hospitalized in neurology and stroke units of Policlinico Umberto I Hospital in Rome from March 8, 2020 and discharged prior to May 31, 2020 were included in the study and compared with patients hospitalized during the same period in 2019. RESULTS: A total of 319 patients were included in the study (n = 103 in 2020, n = 216 in 2019). Among patients hospitalized in 2019, the incidence of HAIs was 31.5% (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.25-0.38), compared with 23.3% (95% CI: 0.15-0.32) in 2020 (p = 0.12). Multivariable logistic regression showed that hospitalization during 2020 was independently associated with a lower risk of HAIs (odds ratio: 0.34, 95% CI:0.16-0.71, p = 0.004). Poisson regression models showed that hospitalization during 2020 was also independently associated with both a lower number of HAIs (relative risk [RR]: 0.56, 95% CI:0.38-0.81, p = 0.01) and a lower number of prescribed antibiotics per patient (RR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.49-0.87, p = 0.02). CONCLUSION: Our study design provides evidence regarding the impact of stricter hygienic measures, such as increased PPE use, on HAIs. Larger studies are needed to support the extension of preventive measures even after the COVID-19 outbreak in order to limit the occurrence of HAIs.
